Description
An adventurous piano trio playing crisply through a range of musical textures.
Notes
Kenny Drew, Jr. is one of the great piano talents of our time. With over 40 recordings to date and performances worldwide to enthralled audiences, there are no musical boundaries for his amazing gift and well-rehearsed craft. "The Music of Tom Becker" is an album that allows him complete freedom as he dives into the music of one of his best friends.
In this recording, Kenny joins friends and colleagues John Jenkins on drums and Joe Porter on bass. The concept for the album was birthed during the many nights of practice and all-out jamming at Tom Becker's home in St. Pete Beach. Tom, (former keyboardist for Wayne Cochran and many others), owns a 100-year old Steinway that he has completely restored and it is a remarkable instrument. Tom is also a composer of some very wonderful music as you'll hear on this recording.
The songs have a slight hint of familiarity to them and each takes turns down interesting harmonic paths as they play out. Of course, Kenny's artistry takes them to another place altogether. Joe's enthusiasm and imagination are apparent with some very, very nice solos throughout the album and a great sense of foundation for Kenny to build on. John's cymbal work is unrivaled and provides a lift to every tune. His drumming on this album is a pinnacle of performance for his recording career.
This piano trio is an album you'll listen to many times as you find more and more to enjoy about it. Whether it's a serious listen or a sonic background adding to an enjoyable road trip, "The Music of Tom Becker" is a winner.
