Description
The opener “Chill” is sort of an introduction to the band of sorts, set to a New Jack Swing-type groove that brings New Edition’s “Crucial” to mind
Notes
From there Chill somehow melds Jesse Johnson-inspired grooves with a Parliament/Funkadelic type melody on the title track. “Body Reaction”, which was one of the singles from this record really (and I mean really) sounds like something Jesse Johnson would have produced, particularly in the tone of the guitar lead that is heard throughout the song, the synth bass line and the synthesizer brass as garnish throughout the song. The overly pleasant “Simple Love” also shares those Jesse-ish arrangements. However, former band member Chuckii Booker sneaks back in the party to give his old friends some big-time production and instrumentation assists on the album’s standout track, “16″, an ode-to-jailbait that sounds (in instrumentation) much like a more amped version of Morris Day’s “Fishnet”. “Hangin’ On” is a revisitation of a track from Chill’s previous outing, which makes the original sound a bit like a demo. “Waiting 4 Love” is a slower number, whose pace and instrumentation (particularly the bass synth) brings a Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis production to mind. The album’s closer, “Exotic Dance”, sounds something similar to Chill’s material on their previous album, only a whole lot more silly — compared to the other stuff on this album, it’s not as strong, but the synthesizer work keeps it from being a total clunker.
